The Episcopal Chamberlain is the chief steward of the bishop’s person, household, dignity, and ceremonial life. It is not a diocesan administrative office. It is a household office.
The Episcopal Chamberlain is the bishop’s senior household officer who has custody of the bishop’s seal, vestments, regalia, documents, schedule, protocol, and personal household.
They control access to the bishop and oversee all domestic, ceremonial, and personal administrative functions of the episcopal household.
What We Do
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Custodian of the Episcopal Seal: They keep and apply the bishop’s seal to official documents.
2. Guardian of Vestments and Regalia: mitre, crozier, ring, pectoral cross, choir dress, pontificals.
3. Master of Protocol He governs ceremonial order, precedence, and the bishop’s public presence.
4. Keeper of the Bishop’s Household (Camera Episcopi) He oversees:
household staff
hospitality
attendants
drivers
ushers
domestic order
5. Gatekeeper He controls access to the bishop — who sees him, when, and under what conditions.
6. Custodian of Documents They maintains:
correspondence
personal files
private papers
confidential materials
7. Supervisor of Subordinate Officers Under him fall:

8. Steward of the Bishop’s Dignity. Their job is to protect the bishop’s person, image, and ceremonial integrity.
